White sneakers in the airport

While I made my way back home from the east coast on Friday, I took more notice at the white sneakers traveling with their fellow men.

I found middle aged men wearing your standard "old school" white sneakers (Reebok, New Balance). Some had color stripes so they were not entirely white.

I also found younger men wearing more hip white sneakers (K-Swiss). These younger men seem to be more of the skateboarder and gangsta types.

I was not bold enough at this time to strike up conversation with anyone to explore this psychology further.

While I did not look at everyone's shoe on my flight to Seattle, I only saw 1 man with white sneakers. Here's a picture of a "old school" pair of sneakers in Providence.

No White Sneakers at Brown University

I happen to be on Thayer Street in Providence mingling with Brown University students tonight. My travels bring me to the East Coast this week for work. I'll have to say that as I ate my dinner from a second story restaurant, I watched several Brown U students throughout the night (I also did some walking up and down the street). I did NOT see ONE white sneaker on any of the men on Thayer street. This is probably due to the fact that this mental situation of wearing white sneakers falls mostly on men above age 35. This could also be due to the culture of Providence and Brown U. Thayer street strikes me as a mix of liberal, artsy, and smart people. The majority of people I saw were under the age of 25. My studies continue and I'll do some research in the airport tomorrow as time permits.

The Psychology of Men that Wear White Sneakers

There seems to be a lot of men wearing white sneakers out there. I'm doing a little personal research to understand this phenomenon.

I have the following questions to pose to the world of men that wear white sneakers:
  • Why do men choose white sneakers over other kinds of sneakers?
  • Are white sneakers chosen based on comfort, fashion, or both?
  • Are wearing white sneakers reminiscent of boyhood memories? Or maybe white or black were the only color choices you were given as a child.
  • How long have you been wearing white sneakers? And please state your current age.
  • Do you ever wear white sneakers with dark slacks (i.e. Dockers) and dark socks?
  • Do you polish or wash your white sneakers to keep them looking sparkling white?
As I see responses get posted, I'm sure I'll have more questions. Thanks for helping me with my research!
